Warawa to head Environment Committee
By Matthew Claxton, Langley Advance June 24, 2011
Langley MP Mark Warawa has been elected chair of Parliament’s Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development.
The recently re-elected Conservative MP has served on the committee for the past five years.
“It’s a great honour to now serve as the chair,” Warawa told the Langley Advance.
He said he expects the next major items for the committee to consider will be a review of the Species at Risk Act and of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
Both were on the schedule when the last Parliament was dissolved for the federal election.
It’s unlikely any private members business for the committee will arise before the next fall, when the committee’s work will begin in earnest.
As a chair of the committee, this will be Warawa’s only committee appointment. Chairs typically stick to one committee due to the extra work load.
The Environment Committee has 12 MPs as members from a variety of parties in Parliament.
Warawa has previously served as parliamentary secretary to several ministers of the environment over the last few years.
He asked to be relieved of that position to focus on new duties in this session of the house.
