Warawa says, “Government of Canada is committed to a high quality postal service”
LANGLEY, BC, March 2, 2009 – This morning, Langley Member of Parliament Mark Warawa issued a statement in response to W-Five’s episode dealing with mail security which aired on February 28.

“The Government of Canada is committed to a high quality postal service.  Canadians expect no less.  The vast majority of mail in Canada is delivered securely, and on time more than 96% of the time,” said Warawa.

Canada Post is taking measures to improve mail security, including replacing the master mail box locks across the country, making sure that customers picking up packages show government-issued identification, and increasing scanning and tracking capabilities.

The Customer Risk Management Forum has been initiated. Through this forum, the company’s major customers receive information and advice on best practices to prepare their mail and minimize risk.

In addition, Canada Post is responding to customer input to improve product and service safety features by: providing delivery options for highly sensitive documents; continuing to implement rigorous authentification processes for its Change of Address service, whether the change is made online or at a retail outlet; and, offering several electronic services that use sophisticated encryption technology.

Canada Post regularly consults with law enforcement agencies to make its processes more secure. Furthermore, Canada Post partners with all levels of law enforcement agencies (municipal, provincial and the RCMP) to investigate crime.

“The Government of Canada will continue to look at options to ensure that we are doing everything we can to ensure the secure delivery of mail,” concluded Warawa.
