Warawa Condemns Opposition Back Room Deal
LANGLEY, B.C., November 29, 2008 – Today Langley MP Mark Warawa met with constituents who are upset about rumours of an overturn of Government so soon after the last election.
“Langley’s voters are telling me in very clear terms that they don’t want a return to the polls and they certainly don’t want a coalition government,” says Warawa. “In these turbulent economic times, it’s hard to imagine that the Opposition parties would put our country’s economic risk by creating a patchwork government.”
Constituents have been flooding Warawa’s constituency office with phone calls and visits, regarding the recent news of a possible overthrow of the newly elected Conservative government.
“The volume of phone calls to my office are way up, and the message is loud and clear: NO to another election and definitely NO to a coalition government, especially one that includes the Bloc Quebecois. It’s ludicrous to have the Bloc as the coalition’s cornerstone party when it is their Party’s mission to remove Quebec from Canada. One can only imagine what backroom deals are being brokered to gain the support of this separatist party.”
The federal Liberals, NDP and Bloc have announced plans to form a coalition government, despite the increased support for a Conservative government in the last election.
“At a time when the federal Liberal Party of Canada suffered its worse loss since Confederation, we’re seeing an unethical backroom deal hatched by the Opposition to overturn the choice made by Canadians only a few weeks ago,” says Warawa. “No one voted for Stéphane Dion to be Prime Minister of a coalition government. The Liberals may say they’re doing this for the sake of the economy, but make no mistake—it is their own political interests that they are putting first, not Canadians.”
Warawa points out that the Conservative Government, led by Prime Minister Harper, an economist, continues to be pro-active on the economy:
- Over the past year, the Conservative Government anticipated the global economic slowdown and began to inject billions in a tax cut stimulus.
- The Conservative Government is infusing billions of dollars into critical infrastructure, such as bridges and roads.
- The Conservative Government has actively protected the Canadian banking system and credit market by providing tens of billions’ of dollars in liquidity to make sure individuals and businesses can still obtain credit.
- The Conservative Government will be proposing an additional stimulus package in the Budget in early 2009.
“Canadians already have a Government in place to tackle the difficult economic issues that we face. Canada’s economy and banking regulations are one of the strongest in the world. The other G20 countries are following our example to stimulate their economies,” says Warawa.
“It is time to get back to the business of governing and not politicking at the expense of our economy,” states Warawa.
