Roads funded
Another financial shot in the arm for local road building has been provided.

Another major infrastructure project backed up by federal stimulus dollars was announced in Langley Saturday. A $6.6 million road and dike upgrade fund was announced by MP Mark Warawa, MLAs Mary Polak and Rich Coleman, and Township Mayor Rick Green.

Three projects will be pursued with the joint funding. The first is a $3.33 million project to reconstruct 96th Avenue at Telegraph Trail and 198th Street. The goal is improved safety, for drivers, pedestrians and those on bikes. Two offset T-intersections will be realigned to create one full turn intersection with left turn lanes, bicycle lanes, sidewalks and a raised median.

The second is a $2.2 million project to increase the height of a 960-metre section of the West Langley Dike between 201 Street and 102B Avenue. The dike will be raised by more than one metre (3.3 feet) and widened to four metres (13.2 feet). The improvements should cut the flood risk for 26 farms and households in the area, as well as commercial and industrial properties.

The final project is a $1 million fund to resurface seven lane-kilometres of Highway 10 from Springbrook Road to 72nd Avenue, extending the road's life by 15 years. Warawa said the projects will both help Langley's growth and protect its environmental protection measures.
"These projects will also provide dozens of jobs during this recovery period from the global recession," Warawa said. "Grants that improve infrastructure are always appreciated, especially when they bring jobs to our community as well," said Mayor Rick Green.
