Before the new cenotaph at Douglas Park can be used for Remembrance Day services, there will be a dedication ceremony.

Langley City and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 21 are hosting a brief ceremony Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.

This dedication will recognize the newly constructed monument as a symbol in recognition of the sacrifices of those who have and who continue to serve this country during times of war and peace.

The legion padre will perform the Wednesday dedication of the new cenotaph, a styled statue in black and white granite.

"Generations of Canadians have sacrificed so that we may live in peace today," commented Langley MP Mark Warawa.

He and other dignitaries joined with members of the Langley Branch for a brief ceremony Nov. 7 to announce federal funding for the project.

Langley City oversaw the construction of the memorial in collaboration with the Langley branch.

The City of Langley is receiving a maximum of $50,000 through the Community War Memorial Program.

The project includes the construction of a new cenotaph commemorating local citizens who served during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. The Douglas Park Cenotaph consists of three granite-clad slabs and is engraved with the words Our Glorious Dead/Nos Morts Glorieux.

Remembrance Day services will then be held there on the morning of Nov. 11. For full details of Remembrance Day services around the Langleys and in Cloverdale, see the Nov. 10 edition of the Langley Advance.
