A Personal Message from Mark:

As you know, the newly-minted Conservative Government faces a vote of non-confidence by the Liberal-NDP-Bloc Opposition.  This vote will take place on Monday, December 8.  If the Opposition motion succeeds, there are probably only two possible outcomes:  One possibility will be a coalition government, made up of the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc Quebecois.  The other possibility will be another federal election.

Either option shows a flagrant disregard of the will of the Canadian people.  The Conservative Government was returned in the fall election with an increased minority, while the Liberal Party suffered its biggest defeat since Confederation.  The NDP have half of the Liberal’s seats, and it’s almost impossible to imagine any Government propped up by a separatist Bloc party.  Canadians have no desire to return to the polls so soon after an election, especially during these turbulent economic times.

Despite what you may hear from the Opposition parties, their actions have nothing to do with the economy and everything to do with their own political agenda.  You will hear them say they have plans for improving the economy while ignoring this Government’s sound fiscal record.  Their actions speak for themselves:  after approving last week’s Speech from the Throne and the Fiscal Update, the Opposition now reverses their position in a blatant grab for power.

The Government has been pro-active in taking action on the economy:

  • Over the past year, the Conservative Government anticipated the global economic slowdown and began to inject billions in a tax cut stimulus.
  • The Conservative Government is infusing billions of dollars into critical infrastructure, such as bridges and roads.
  • The Conservative Government has actively protected the Canadian banking system and credit market by providing tens of billions’ of dollars in liquidity to make sure individuals and businesses can still obtain credit.
  • The Conservative Government will be proposing an additional stimulus package in the Budget in early 2009.

The Conservative Government will do what is necessary to effectively stimulate the Canadian economy.

The Conservative Government’s fiscal management has been prudent and practical, so much so that of the G-8 countries, Canada was the only nation to produce a surplus this year.  We also recognize the global financial turmoil has affected our country and we have plans in place to deal productively with the economy.  Our economy should not have to withstand the volatility that a government change will bring.

Canadians did not give the Opposition a mandate to govern, nor do Canadians want to return to the polls less than two months after the last election. If you feel strongly about this position, then I urge you to take action: Please contact our office to let us know how you feel, as well as contact the leaders of the Opposition Parties. We only have a week to make your voices heard, so I urge you to not delay.   Canadians’ voices deserve to be heard over the undemocratic, back room deals made by the Opposition parties.

Sincerely,

Mark Warawa, M.P.
