Member of Parliament Mark Warawa announces Funding for New War Memorial in Langley City
The City of Langley is receiving $50,000 through the Community War Memorial Program.
“It is our sacred duty to remember and honour our Veterans and the brave men and women in uniform who serve Canada so selflessly,” said Minister Blaney. “The memorials we build today will forever reflect our nation’s gratitude to the generations of Canadians who allow us to live in peace and freedom.”
“I commend the City of Langley for providing us a place in our community to honour our local heroes,” said MP Warawa. “By supporting the construction of new memorials, our government is working to ensure the sacrifices of our Veterans will not be forgotten.”
The project has been spearheaded and primarily funded by the City of Langley. “This impressive sculptural piece is something that will serve as a memorial for war veterans and all citizens far into the future,” says Mayor Peter Fassbender. “We in the City of Langley are fortunate to have the support of Veteran Affairs Canada in helping bring this project to fruition.”
The project includes the construction of a new cenotaph commemorating local citizens who served during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. The Douglas Park Cenotaph consists of three granite-clad slabs and is engraved with the words Our Glorious Dead / Nos Morts Glorieux. A public prayer and dedication ceremony will take place on Wednesday November 9th at 2:00pm. “Please join us at this ceremony,” Warawa adds.
Through the Community War Memorial Program, our Government is fulfilling its commitment to further commemorate the courage and sacrifice of our Veterans and members of our armed forces by bringing individuals, groups and businesses together to build new cenotaphs and monuments.
