Langley – Mark Warawa, Member of Parliament for Langley, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced today federal funding to strengthen economic opportunities in Langley. Funding for this investment is being provided under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“This important investment will help put Canadians to work, encourage greater participation in physical activity and use of recreational facilities, and ensure that communities across Canada have access to the essential infrastructure we need today and in the future,” said Warawa. “Our Government, through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program, is providing a timely, targeted stimulus to the economy and helping reduce the impacts of the global recession.”
“The Pacific Parklands Foundation will receive federal funding to extend the Tavistock Trail, located in Brae Island Regional Park, Township of Langley,” announced Warawa. “The existing linear trail will be extended by 958 metres and transformed into a complete loop trail system. Funds allocated from the federal government total $26,500 for this project.”
“The Metro Vancouver Regional Parks system is one of the finest assets of our province and the lives of everyone, regardless of age, income, or ability, are enriched by opportunities to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature,” notes David Pohl, President of the Pacific Parklands Foundation. “We worked with Metro Vancouver Regional Parks staff and volunteers with the Brae Island / Derby Reach Parks Association to complete and submit this application for funding and we are all extremely pleased that is was successful and that the Tavistock Trail will now be extended along the Fraser River side of the Island and
looping back to the main trial for the enjoyment of all current and future users.”
Brae Island Regional Park is a day-use and recreation camping park. It lies across Bedford Channel from the historic Village of Fort Langley, providing visitors with numerous opportunities to explore both the natural environment of the Island as well as the culturally rich heritage of the birthplace of BC.
The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
