More than 70 students in Langley will have an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and earn money for the upcoming school year thanks to the federal Canada Summer Jobs initiative. MP Mark Warawa made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
“Our government’s top priority is creating jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity for all Canadians,” says Warawa. “Through Canada Summer Jobs, we are helping employers in Langley create dozens of summer job opportunities for students, while strengthening our community’s economy.”
More than $322,000 thousand dollars will be invested in Langley this summer. Organizations that will benefit include the Scouts, the YMCA, churches, child care societies, Flip City, the Fort Langley Canoe Club, senior’s centres, the Aldergrove Festival Days society and more. The funding will enable the students to gain the skills and experience they need to be successful, both now and in the future.
Canada Summer Jobs is an important part of our government’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES). With annual funding of more than $300 million, YES helps youth, particularly those facing barriers to employment, obtain career information, develop employment skills, find jobs and stay employed.
Economic Action Plan 2012 will provide an additional $50 million over two years to enhance YES so that more young people can gain tangible skills and experience. This funding will focus on connecting young Canadians with jobs in fields that are in high demand. Additionally, the federal government permanently increased the annual budget for Canada Summer Jobs by $10 million in 2011.
“Canada Summer Jobs 2012 will provide up to 36 000 important job opportunities and experiences for students across the country” added Warawa. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s workforce, so by investing in them we are helping contribute to Canada’s long-term growth, competitiveness and overall prosperity.”
