Government of Canada helps youth in Langley and Aldergrove prepare for the job market
$368,000 Invested in Federal Skills Link funding

LANGLEY, BRITISH COLUMBIA,—Local youth who face barriers to employment will get job preparation training and work experience through the Government of Canada’ssupport for an employment project. Mr. Mark Warawa, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment and Member of Parliament for Langley, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

“For many young Canadians, making the transition to the job market is a challenge, especially in today’s environment,” said Mr. Warawa. “That’s why our government is creating opportunities for youth to succeed through support for initiatives like the Express to Success–Langley project.”

With assistance from the federal Skills Link program, the Mission Community Skills Centre Society will help 39 youth develop the skills and experience needed to find a job or the confidence to return to school.

The project participants will attend group-based employability workshops that will cover topics such as problem solving, résumé writing and interview techniques. The workshops will also feature guest speakers who will help the participants understand the labour market and give them tips on searching for work. The participants will then apply their new skills and gain hands-on experience through work placements in sectors such as retail, hospitality and tourism.

Skills Link helps youth facing barriers to employment, such as single parents, Aboriginal youth, youth with disabilities, recent immigrants, youth living in rural and remote areas, and youth who have dropped out of high school.

The Mission Community Skills Centre Society will receive over $368,000 in federal Skills Link funding to support its Express to Success–Langley project.
