LANGLEY, BC – The Township of Langley will benefit from a LocalMotion grant announced today to help build local infrastructure and invest in public safety initiatives.
“The Government of Canada is pleased to join with the Province in providing LocalMotion funding for Langley, which helps to both build local infrastructure and create jobs,” said Mark Warawa, Langley MP and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of the Environment. “This is another example of how the federal government is committed to strengthening B.C.’s economy and keeping British Columbians working. On a personal note, my wife Diane and I enjoy walking the Fort to Fort trail. The new pedestrian and cycling overpass will be a wonderful enhancement to visitors and locals alike.”
Warawa joined Fort Langley-Aldergrove MLA Rich Coleman and Township Mayor Rick Green to announce the federal-provincial funding totalling $154,511 through the LocalMotion program in order to build a pedestrian/cycling bridge over CNR tracks at Bedford Landing. The proposed works include:
- An approximately 39 m steel span bridge;
- Ramps at either end; and
- Asphalt trails connecting to both ends.
The four-year, $40-million LocalMotion program was announced by the Premier in 2006. “This program assists communities to build capital projects like bike paths, walkways and greenways, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make communities more senior and disability friendly,” says MLA Rich Coleman, and BC’s Minister of Housing and Social Development. “This project will enrich the lives of Fort Langley residents and provide employment for many.”
“As a result of a commitment on the part of all levels of government to accelerate the disbursement of infrastructure funding to stimulate the economy, the federal government proudly supports the LocalMotion program,” added MP Warawa. For more information, visit www.localmotion.gov.bc.ca online.
These investments are part of the Government of Canada and Province of B.C.’s ongoing commitment to invest in B.C. communities and support the economy. The LocalMotion program provides local governments up to 50 per cent funding for approved projects up to a maximum provincial contribution of $1 million.
Beyond this funding announcement, the Government of Canada is taking important steps to support economic growth. Canada’s Economic Action Plan, announced in Budget 2009, is a balanced stimulus plan that includes massive investments in infrastructure, tax relief and transfers. “This plan will provide close to $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years which will address needs in communities across Canada,” says Warawa. “As well, it contributes to long-term economic growth through investments in public infrastructure, such as roads, water treatment, green energy and transit.”
