Firefighters and Langley City politicians offered their tributes to fallen emergency responders as they unveiled a statue of a firefighter on Friday.
The statue is located in front of the City’s fire hall in the 5700 block of 203rd Street, placed as if in the act of raising a flag.
City Councillor Rosemary Wallace thanked the many community members whose passion led to the statue’s creation.

Her mind was on the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks as the statue was unveiled, she said. In particular, the sacrifices of firefighters in the Twin Towers were in the thoughts of those gathered.

Wallace quoted the Bible, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends,” just before the statue was revealed.
Mayor Peter Fassbender talked about how firefighters all over the world put themselves in harm’s way.

“They do that every day, depending on the circumstances they have to face,” Fassbender said.

Langley MP Mark Warawa noted that all MPs have begun a tradition of wearing red on Fridays, to honour firefighters.
Derek Rowe, who helped create the statue, said it was inspired by his meeting with a firefighter on 9/11.
The statue cost $19,000.
