The money will help young people dig themselves out of a hole when it comes to jobs by literally digging holes, and doing other sorts of environmental projects. On behalf of Human Resource Minister Diane Finley, Langley MP Mark Warawa presented LEPS with $261,799 in Skills Link funding for the Youth Enhancing Aquatic Habitats (YEAH!) program. LEPS will use the funds to help 20 young people facing employment barriers to develop life and work skills. The Township of Langley is also providing $64,254 to the society for this year's YEAH! project. "This is an excellent program that will help develop two of our most important resources: youth and the environment," said Mayor Rick Green. "Being able to provide job training, skills and experience to young people while caring for the environment is a win-win for the entire community. In addition to learning environmentally related job skills, the young people take workshops on the environment and personal development so they are better equipped to find work or get into higher education. Previous YEAH crews have removed 40 truck loads of invasive plant species, mapped 15 kilometres of streams, conducted workshops in front of 1,500 students, worked on more than 40 different sites, created two educational plots at the LEPS Demonstration Garden, and restored 5.4 km of streams. hcolpitts@langleyadvance.com Read more: http://www.langleyadvance.com/technology/Feds+fund+green+group/3240953/story.html#ixzz0tUThS2xY |
